Biodynamic farming is a method of farming that engages an understanding of the interconnectivity between all life forms that contribute to the space itself being a living organism. Technical methods of feeding, seeding, and harvesting are done according to the principles laid out by Rudolph Steiner and the organization that regulates this certification Demeter. Biodynamic farming principles emphasize that humans have a responsibility for the development of their ecological and social environment, one that goes far beyond mainstream economic gains.
How is biodynamic farming different from regular farming?
Biodynamic farming is a method that greatly differs from traditional “organic” farming processes. To be considered organic means simply that toxic pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are not used. These practices are only a baseline for biodynamic farming; as the practice goes far beyond these considerations. Biodynamic farming is a “closed loop” system where everything used in the process is made on the farm without the purchase of any external inputs such as fertilizers and harmful pesticides. The use and care of animal livestock plays a crucial role on a Biodynamic Farm. Biodynamic farming practices utilize the insights of astronomy and astrology to work with the celestial elements that are active at the time to make the best decisions for cultivating. A biodynamic farm creates and feeds the soil nourishing preparations, and does everything needed to create a deeply rich microbial life as the soil is thought of as the “blood” of the farm. It practices crop rotation, no tilling, and the creation and use of biodynamic compost made on the farm. Biodynamic farming implements “regenerative” methods rather than a process that is just simply “sustainable.”
Because of the regenerative process involved with biodynamic farming, the entire soil and land health is improved because of the farming process. Biodynamic farming has been scientifically proven to reduce global warming, through a process known as “carbon farming,” where the healthy, vital land that has been biodynamically farmed sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.
Why is biodynamic farming imperative to rewilding our world?
An opportunity is here for us to return to a more natural way of life, a chance to develop a greater understanding of the global connection between land and all things great and small; and that is the opportunity to rewild our world. Rewilding is the introduction, or reintroduction of specific animal and plant species nature-designed to support, sustain and balance the ecosystem and energy of the environment. Nature in balance and as it was created to benefit all inhabitants. Bringing back the concepts of biodynamic farming in today’s modern world is imperative in order to restore our understanding of the relationship and harmony between man and our environment and how to better coexist with the planet. Biodynamic farming helps to rewild our world as the process has been proven to restore, enhance and maintain an ecological balance. This conscious process of living with the land and its inhabitants helps ensure farming methods are considerate to the planet, our relations and to ourselves.
Biodynamic farming creates and engages a deeper relationship with not only the land, but one’s self and all living creatures. The planets, sun and the moon effect biodynamic farming the same way that they affect the life of all human, plant, and animal relations. Biodynamic farming is done with close attention to celestial influences, working in harmony with these entities to yield the greatest synergistic outcome. This deep, synergistic level of understanding and practice is not used in any other manner of farming in the world aside from biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farming practices have been found to be more resilient to environmental challenges when compared to traditional organic farming practices. This process fosters a diverse biosphere and is more energy efficient; factors that have become increasingly important in the current face of climate change, energy scarcity and population growth happening within our world.
Harmony, Balance, Coexistence
There is a natural harmony that exists between humans and the environment. An innate understanding lies within each of us as people to be able to find the greater good; to work with each other and nature to find balance amongst all who share the planet and call her home. One of the largest contributions that the concept of biodynamic farming has given to our modern society is to educate consumers about the need to return to living in harmony with Mother Nature and all her inhabitants; and the benefits that happen to humanity as a result. Biodynamic farming is rewilding in its purest form and is much needed to help move humanity in the positive, harmonious, and balanced direction needed today.
At Naturally Considerate we collaborated with the leaders in the Biodynamic chocolate movement, Zenbunni Chocolates. We created a special line of microcosmic Sacred Sage and Maize Chocolate Bars to birth a relationship between our consumers and biodynamic concepts. These holistic, biodynamic chocolates are made with non-GMO, organic late summer corn grown in the United States, powdered sacred sage, stone ground microcosmic, biodynamic and organic cacao and cane jaggery. Guilt and gluten free! Within each box of chocolates contains a healing quartz crystal and single White Sage leaf intended to ground, cleanse and act as medicine for each customer. All ingredients are 100% natural and conscientiously sourced from biodynamic farmers and proceeds from each purchase directly supports the global environmental and cultural rewilding projects of CANA Foundation.
